Counselling, Coaching & Support

Counselling and Coaching

Ken provides neurodiversity coaching and counselling for those affected by neurologic disorders such as ADHD, OCD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and Tourette Syndrome. He is able to meet online for counselling and coaching for adults as well as children. Having Tourette, his lived experiences include successfully parenting neurologically challenged children in his own home and as a teacher of neurologically challenged children in the school.  Ken has a first-hand understanding of challenging behaviours and applying understanding and strategies to manage them. In your sessions, he will share tried and true evidence-based strategies as well as first-hand life experience to identify daily challenges, identify areas of weakness, and apply personal strengths to overcome them (using a strength-based approach).  Participants typically require 1-2 sessions (one hour each) with the possibility of subsequent “booster sessions”, if desired.

Parent Support – Ken draws on his own parenting experience, coupled with his professional training as a behaviour specialist to support the emotional growth of children in the home and minimize conflict brought on by neurologic disorders.

Adult Support – Relying on training and personal experience, Ken determines your personal profile, helping you to understand why you do what you do (positives and negatives) and outlines strategies to promote positivity in everyday life and relationships, as well as supporting you in determining and reaching your professional goals. School Support – Ken combines 30 years’ experience as an educator (18 years as a school principal) with his extensive knowledge and experience of neurologic disorders to support school administrators and all school staff. Ken can provide either online consultations or in-service presentations for staff.

  1. Learning about Tourette Disorder as well as the other associated disorders

  3. Creating strategies to overcome your challenges that result from TS+
  4. Gaining confidence and resilience in yourself and your neurology

Here’s a synopsis of the program…

Tourette Disorder – A Pathway to Building Confidence Through Understanding

What I do:

  • Recognize, identify, and examine your symptoms of Tourette Disorder, ADHD and OCD
  • Provide knowledge of Tourette Disorder and its associated disorders
  • Help you to identify your triggers
  • Discover, identify, and examine your triggers/stressors that increase your symptoms, as well as help you create coping strategies to manage symptoms
  • Provide foundational knowledge, allowing you to continue a treatment path for improved mental health
  • Teach resilience through understanding
  • Evaluate symptoms to resolve challenges at home, school and beyond

This is done in 4 stages:

Step 1

Uncovering and Understanding Your Symptoms (Not Your Behaviours)

  • Learn about Tourette traits and symptoms as well as those of the associated disorders (ADHD, OCD, anxiety)
  • Identify your symptoms
  • Symptom analysis (the degree to which they impact your life, prioritizing symptom management)

Step 2

Learning to Take Personal Inventory (Discovery and Insight)

  • Recognizing and identifying your pre-tic warning signs
  • Identifying your triggers (trigger analysis)
  • Exploring appropriate responses to manage symptoms

Step 3

Finding Predictability in the Unpredictable (Strategies)

  • Review triggers
  • Review de-stressors
  • Establish proactive thinking and actions to prepare for stressors in order to decrease triggers and symptoms

Step 4

(and subsequent booster sessions) – Teaching Resilience

  • Building confidence through understanding
  • Re-thinking the situation
  • Being the expert in the room
  • Taking charge of the situation
  • Reflection (through post-incident analysis and discussion)
